It was semi final day for the boys. It was the Shield semi final against Sligo/Leitrim and a chance to maybe bring home some silverware. With a 10.30am kick off, there was no time for hanging around. To their credit the lads had had a good night’s sleep and were up and ready to go, in plenty of time. However, the lads from Sligo/Leitrim must have been up earlier as disaster struck in the first minute when we gifted them a penalty and then shock, horror, ten minutes later they scored a second. We did pull one back through Darra but the toils of the week were beginning to show and try as they did, we couldn’t get that equaliser and our opponents went on to score another two which left us disappointed and totally deflated.
This left us with our last game for positions to play against Clare at 5pm. Time for a bit of grub, some physio on a few of the lads and here we go again for the last time.
Could we finish on a high ?
With only one goal to show for our efforts from Conor Rohan, Clare hit us for three and this result literally added insult to injury as the curtain finally came down on all things football for another year.
As is the norm these days, the lads got over the disappointment quicker than the adults. They had struck up a close friendship with our neighbours from Galway. It was a good lively night for the lads as after the Kareoke we had the Xbox Championship final between the Galway champion and our own champion Andrew. We won this by three goals to nil which sent the lads into a chorus of “De Athlone” in jubilation.
Clive & the two Tommys have done great work with this squad and have expended a lot of energy and voluntary commitment to giving the lads the chance to play in Europe’s most prestigious competition at this age group.
Well done Lads and THANK YOU. |
