Athlone is located in the very centre of Ireland on the banks of the River Shannon and is the thriving commercial and industrial capital of the Irish midlands.
The town and its hinterland has a population of some 25,000 and has a young age profile, with 45% of that population less than 24 years of age. Athlone is also home to an Institute of Technology on a 45 acre campus and has almost 5,000 full and part-time students.
The Athlone & District Schoolboy/Girl League (ADSL) was founded in 1977 and provides organised football for the 15 clubs in its membership for ages Under 8 up to Under 16.
Athlone has a long and proud football history and tradition. The towns Premier club, Athlone Town Football Club, founded in 1887, is the oldest senior club in the Republic of Ireland. Athlone was a stronghold of the game outside Dublin in its formative years.
Athlone provided four of the first officially recognised international team at the 1924 Paris Olympics. “The Town” as it is affectionately known, has had numerous achievements most notably when “beating” AC Milan 0-0 in the UEFA Cup in 1975.
The Town also won two League of Ireland Championships in 1981 & in 1983.
The ADSL is structured in a way which provides organised football for over 1,300 registered members in a safe environment.
